Medha Patkar is one of the female gem, who is dedicated to social service. She played a major role in stopping the construction of ‘Sardar Sarovar Dam’.

Medha Patkar was educated from a Marathi school in Bombay. She graduated in chemistry. She was brilliant from her student life itself. Her father was a famous trade union leader. So she inherited the leadership quality. She developed deep passion for the lower strata of society. She later on came in contact with Sunderlal Bahuguna, Baba Amte and plunged herself into the field of social service.

Then she got admission in Tata Memorial Institute of Bombay to study social disparity, living standard of poor, illiteracy, ignorance. Medha came across with the issue of destruction caused by Narmada Valley. She associated herself with Sardar Sarovar Dam and helped in stopping the construction of the dam which caused adverse effects to environment and the shifting of the tribal people caused due to the dam.

Medha got ‘Right Liberty Award’ in 1991 for her fight against Sardar Sarovar Dam. She got Rs. 18 lakh prize money which she donated for Narmada movement due to which a large number of tribal people’s right of home could be restored back to them. In this way Medha Patkar is a leading social activist, who inspires Indians to raise voice for a noble cause.
